For Pennsylvania couples, the decision to divorce can be a difficult one. While saving a marriage may seem like the best idea, there are some circumstances under which a divorce might be wiser. Although each marriage is unique and couples know their own situation best, one psychologist offers some advice on situations that could suggest that divorce is best, and some that may indicate the marriage is worth saving.

Violent relationships could be irreparable and divorce might be the best way to stop the violence. If children are the victims of violence committed by one spouse, the other spouse might want to consider taking the children out of the home.

When someone has an addiction, there is hope of recovery with treatment. Though addiction is an illness, and marriage vows include staying together through sickness, if someone who has an addiction refuses to get help, this could be considered a legitimate reason for the other spouse to seek divorce.

An unfaithful spouse is something that some partners find themselves unable to forgive. If a spouse’s infidelity is unforgivable to their partner, divorce may be best for both people.

In some cases, saving the marriage might be best even if the relationship has suffered serious blows. There could be financial consequences to divorce, and it may be best to save the marriage for the financial security of both spouses or the children. It could also be worth saving the marriage for health reasons. The stress of divorce can be bad for one’s health, particularly if someone has health issues that can be exacerbated by emotional disturbances.

When a couple decides to divorce, each spouse may choose to be represented by an attorney. The divorce process could involve issues including child support, spousal support and property division.
